UV oxidation is a purification technology that uses ultraviolet light to reduce organic contaminants in water. In ultrapure water systems, UV lamps operating at specific wavelengths can break down organic molecules into smaller ionic or oxidized species that can be removed by downstream ion exchange resins.

It does not remove particles, salts or bacteria by itself. It works best as part of a complete ultrapure water polishing loop.
UV light at suitable wavelengths provides energy that breaks chemical bonds in organic molecules. In many ultrapure systems, UV oxidation converts organics into charged or more easily removable species. These are then captured by polishing ion exchange resins.
The effectiveness of UV oxidation depends on lamp wavelength, intensity, exposure time, flow rate, water clarity and system design.
Organic contamination can affect sensitive analytical applications. In HPLC and LC-MS/MS, organic impurities can contribute to baseline noise, ghost peaks and reduced sensitivity. In TOC-sensitive applications, organic control is critical.
UV oxidation helps maintain low TOC levels and improves confidence in ultrapure water quality.
