Ultrafiltration is a membrane-based separation technology used to remove very small particles, bacteria, endotoxins and macromolecules from water. UF membranes have pore sizes small enough to retain high molecular weight contaminants while allowing water and dissolved ions to pass through.
In laboratory water systems, ultrafiltration is often used in final polishing stages where microbial and endotoxin control is important.

UF does not remove dissolved salts or small ionic impurities. It must be combined with RO, EDI or DI when ionic purity is required.
Water is passed through a membrane with very fine pores. Contaminants larger than the membrane cut-off are retained, while purified water passes through. UF performance is commonly described by molecular weight cut-off or pore size.
In high-purity water systems, UF modules are often placed near the point of use or in the final recirculation loop to ensure microbial and endotoxin reduction before dispensing.
Certain applications are highly sensitive to biological contaminants. Endotoxins and microbial by-products can affect cell culture, molecular biology, IVF and clinical applications.
UF provides an additional barrier against these contaminants and helps improve confidence in water quality for biological applications.
