Degassing is a purification support technology used to remove dissolved gases from water. In laboratory water systems, dissolved carbon dioxide is the most common concern because it can affect resistivity and increase the load on ion exchange resins.
Degassing may be used in systems where feed water has high dissolved carbon dioxide or where maintaining high resistivity is important.

Different degassing technologies may be used, including membrane degassing, vacuum degassing or other gas removal methods. In membrane degassing, water flows on one side of a gas-permeable membrane while gas is removed from the other side using vacuum or sweep gas.
As dissolved gases are removed, the load on downstream ion exchange resin can reduce.
Carbon dioxide dissolves in water and forms weak carbonic acid, which dissociates into ionic species. These ions reduce resistivity and consume ion exchange capacity.
In ultrapure water systems, high dissolved carbon dioxide can shorten polishing cartridge life and make it harder to maintain high resistivity. Degassing can improve system efficiency in such cases.
