What is Activated Carbon Filtration?

Activated carbon filtration is a purification technology used to remove chlorine, chloramine, organic compounds and certain taste or odor-causing substances from feed water. Activated carbon is a highly porous form of carbon with a large internal surface area. As water passes through the carbon bed or cartridge, many contaminants are retained on the carbon surface by adsorption or chemical reaction.

In laboratory water purification systems, activated carbon is commonly used as a pretreatment stage before reverse osmosis membranes, electrodeionization modules and ion exchange cartridges. It helps protect sensitive downstream purification components and improves the reliability of the complete system.

What does Activated Carbon remove?

Activated carbon helps reduce:

  • Free chlorine
  • Chloramine
  • Organic compounds
  • Oxidizing agents
  • Some taste and odor-causing substances
  • Certain trace organic impurities


Its primary role in laboratory water systems is protection. Chlorine and other oxidizing agents can damage RO membranes and degrade system performance. By reducing these contaminants early in the purification process, activated carbon helps extend the life of membranes, resins and polishing cartridges.

How does Activated Carbon work?

Activated carbon works mainly through adsorption. Organic molecules and some other contaminants are attracted to the surface of the carbon and retained within its pore structure. The effectiveness of activated carbon depends on the type of carbon, pore structure, surface area, contact time, flow rate and the concentration of contaminants in the feed water.

For chlorine reduction, activated carbon also acts chemically. Free chlorine is converted into less aggressive forms, reducing the risk of oxidative damage to downstream components. Chloramine removal is generally slower than free chlorine removal and may require longer contact time or specially selected carbon media.

Why is Activated Carbon important in laboratory water systems?

Activated carbon is important because it protects the purification chain. Without proper chlorine and organic reduction, RO membranes can suffer premature failure, ion exchange resin life may reduce, and TOC levels may become harder to control.

In high-purity water systems, activated carbon may also be used in final polishing cartridges or reservoir vent filters to help reduce trace organic contamination. However, carbon can also become a site for bacterial growth if not maintained properly. For this reason, carbon cartridges must be replaced at recommended intervals and used as part of a controlled purification design.
