What is Silica?

Silica is a naturally occurring impurity found in many water sources. It may exist in dissolved, colloidal or reactive forms. Silica is important because it can be difficult to remove completely and may pass through some purification stages more easily than common ionic contaminants.

In high-purity laboratory water systems, silica can become a concern in trace analysis and certain sensitive applications.

Where does Silica come from?

Silica may come from:

  • Natural minerals
  • Groundwater
  • Borewell water
  • Municipal water
  • Sand and geological formations
  • Colloidal particles
  • RO membrane passage
  • Exhausted purification media

Feed water silica levels vary significantly depending on the water source.

How does Silica affect laboratory water?

Silica can interfere with some analytical methods and may contribute to contamination in trace-level analysis. Colloidal silica can also contribute to fouling in membranes and filters.

Silica contamination can cause:

  • Analytical background interference
  • Contamination in trace analysis
  • Difficulty achieving very low impurity levels
  • RO or membrane fouling in some cases
  • Increased load on polishing stages
  • Quality concerns in high-purity applications

Silica may not always be fully indicated by standard conductivity or resistivity measurement, depending on its form.

How is Silica controlled?

Silica can be controlled using:

  • Reverse osmosis
  • Deionization
  • Electrodeionization
  • Proper polishing cartridges
  • Monitoring of feed water quality
  • Good pretreatment
  • Avoiding exhausted resins
  • System design based on feed water analysis

In critical applications, silica should be considered during system selection and feed water evaluation.

Applications affected

Silica may affect:

  • Trace analysis
  • ICP-MS
  • ICP-OES
  • Semiconductor-related applications
  • High-purity analytical work
  • Reagent preparation
  • Applications requiring very low contamination levels
