Deionization is a purification technology that removes dissolved ionic contaminants from water using ion exchange resins. These resins exchange unwanted ions in the water with hydrogen and hydroxide ions, which combine to form water.
DI is widely used in laboratory water systems because it can produce very high resistivity water when properly designed and maintained. It is commonly used after RO or EDI as a polishing stage for Type I ultrapure water.

DI does not effectively remove non-ionic organic compounds, particles, bacteria or endotoxins by itself. For this reason, it is often combined with activated carbon, UV oxidation, ultrafiltration and final filters.
DI cartridges contain cation and anion exchange resins. Cation resin removes positively charged ions such as sodium, calcium and magnesium. Anion resin removes negatively charged ions such as chloride, sulfate and nitrate.
Mixed-bed DI resin combines cation and anion resins in one cartridge to achieve very high ionic purity. As the resin becomes exhausted, resistivity drops and the cartridge must be replaced or regenerated depending on system type.
Ionic impurities can interfere with analytical results, reagent preparation and sensitive laboratory applications. DI is one of the key technologies used to achieve high resistivity water.
In ultrapure water systems, DI polishing is essential for reaching resistivity levels required for critical analytical applications such as HPLC, ICP-MS and molecular biology.
