Electro-de-ionization is a continuous ion removal technology that combines ion exchange resins, ion-selective membranes and electric current. It is used to produce high-quality purified water without the need for chemical regeneration.
EDI is commonly used after reverse osmosis. The RO stage removes most impurities, while EDI further reduces dissolved ionic contaminants to produce consistent Type II purified water or high-quality feed water for ultrapure polishing.
EDI helps remove:
EDI is not designed to remove large particles, chlorine, organics or bacteria as a primary function. It must be protected by proper pretreatment and RO.
Inside an EDI module, water flows through chambers containing ion exchange resin. Dissolved ions are captured by the resin and transported through ion-selective membranes under the influence of an electric field. The ions are removed into a concentrate stream and discharged.
The electric current continuously regenerates the resin inside the module by splitting water into hydrogen and hydroxide ions. This allows the system to operate continuously without acid or caustic regeneration chemicals.
EDI provides stable purified water quality with lower chemical handling and reduced maintenance compared to traditional regenerable deionization systems. It is particularly useful for laboratories that need consistent Type II water production.
By producing high-quality purified water before the final polishing stage, EDI also helps extend the life of Type I polishing cartridges.
