What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a membrane-based purification technology used to remove a wide range of dissolved and suspended impurities from water. In an RO system, feed water is pressurized and passed across a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane allows water molecules to pass through while rejecting most dissolved salts, particles, organic compounds and microorganisms.

RO is one of the most important technologies in laboratory water purification. It is commonly used as the primary purification stage for producing Type III water, Type II water, or feed water for further polishing to Type I ultrapure water.

What does Reverse Osmosis remove?

Reverse osmosis helps reduce:

    • Dissolved salts
    • Ionic impurities
    • Particles
    • Colloids
    • Organic contaminants
    • Bacteria and microorganisms
    • Pyrogens and larger contaminants, depending on membrane type and system design

RO does not remove every impurity completely. Some dissolved gases, very small neutral molecules and trace contaminants may pass through. Therefore, RO is often combined with EDI, DI, UV, ultrafiltration or final polishing cartridges.

How does Reverse Osmosis work?

In natural osmosis, water moves through a semi-permeable membrane from a dilute solution toward a more concentrated solution. Reverse osmosis applies pressure to reverse this natural movement. Water is forced through the membrane, producing purified permeate on one side and concentrated reject water on the other side.

The quality of RO water depends on feed water quality, membrane type, operating pressure, temperature, recovery rate and pretreatment. Good pretreatment is essential to protect RO membranes from chlorine, scaling, fouling and particulate blockage.

Why is RO important in laboratory water systems?

RO greatly reduces the impurity load on downstream purification stages. This improves the life of EDI modules, DI cartridges and final polishing packs. It also reduces operating cost by preventing polishing consumables from being exhausted too quickly.

In many laboratory systems, RO is the foundation of the purification chain. A well-designed RO stage improves consistency, reduces maintenance and supports reliable production of purified water.
