Sediment Filtration

What is Sediment Filtration?

Sediment filtration is one of the most basic and important pretreatment technologies used in water purification systems. It removes suspended particles such as sand, silt, rust, scale, pipe debris and other visible or fine particulate matter from feed water.

In laboratory water systems, sediment filtration is usually placed at the beginning of the purification chain. Its purpose is not to produce purified water directly, but to protect downstream technologies such as activated carbon filters, RO membranes, softeners, EDI modules and polishing cartridges.

What does Sediment Filtration remove?

Sediment filtration helps remove:

  • Sand
  • Silt
  • Rust particles
  • Pipe scale
  • Suspended solids
  • Fine particulate matter
  • Debris from feed water lines

The micron rating of the filter determines the size of particles it can retain. Common pretreatment filters may range from coarse filtration to fine filtration depending on feed water condition and system design.

How does Sediment Filtration work?

Sediment filters work by physical separation. As water passes through the filter media, particles larger than the pore size are trapped. Depth filters can also capture particles within the thickness of the filter structure, allowing them to hold more dirt before pressure drop increases.

Cartridge filters, depth filters and multi-layer filters may be used depending on water quality, flow rate and maintenance requirements.

Why is Sediment Filtration important?

Suspended particles can foul RO membranes, block valves, damage pumps, reduce flow and increase maintenance. Even if particles are not chemically harmful, they can physically disturb system operation. A good sediment filtration stage helps improve the stability and life of the complete purification system. It reduces the particle load on downstream technologies and helps maintain consistent pressure and flow.

Typical applications

Sediment filtration is used in:

  • Feed water pretreatment
  • RO protection
  • Protection of activated carbon cartridges
  • Protection of pumps and valves
  • Large centralized laboratory water systems
  • Systems using municipal or borewell feed water
